2019 Best Cookie Video contest: Sonja’s cookie video

Submitted by Sonja

I’m really excited to enter my cookie video this year. I’m 10-years-old and am in fifth grade.  I’ve been in Girl Scouts for four years and have been participating in cookie sales all four years.

My cookie goal is 500 packages, but I know I’ll sell more anyway.  I worked really hard on this video with my dad.  I hope that everyone will have as much fun watching it, as I did making it.  I’m off to sell some more cookies to reach my goal and to raise money for our troop.

Outdoor field trips at Bluff Lake Nature Center

Visit Bluff Lake Nature Center, a beautiful wildlife refuge and outdoor classroom in northeast Denver and for a unique and memorable experience! Environmental educators will guide Girl Scouts through exploration hikes and interactive activities specifically designed to fulfill requirements for a nature-related badge.

Daisies can earn their “EcoLearner” badge as they get first-hand practice protecting nature, or their “Outdoor Art Maker” badge as they create nature-inspired art.

Brownies can earn their “Outdoor Adventurer” badge as they explore the outdoors in a new way, or their “Bugs” badge as they experience the world of insects and spiders.

Juniors can earn their “Animal Habitats” badge as they learn about the places animals call home, or their “Flowers” badge as they enjoy the science and beauty of our native flora.

If you have something else in mind, ask us about customizing a program for your troop!

Field trips are 1-2 hours long, and visitors are welcome to stay and enjoy the site for the rest of the day following the program. Trips are $10 per Girl Scout (unless otherwise noted). There is a minimum of 8 Girl Scouts to schedule a trip. Adult-to-girl ratios for events must be met. There is no charge for adult chaperones or non-participating siblings. Helping foster children around Denver

Submitted by Clare F.

Metro Denver

Highlands Ranch

I know that so many young children are sent to foster homes with very few belongings, sometimes carrying those belongings in a plastic trash bag. Almost nothing is their own. This bothered me, knowing how much my belongings mean to me. To help, I decided to create cinch sack bags for some of the girls. I hoped that it would help some girls on their journey, and inspire others to do the same. I delivered them to Mount Saint Vincent’s Home, and they have been distributed to girls around the metro-district.

These cinch sack bags were sewn and designed by me. In order to have the funds to buy the fabric and the materials, I started a small business of sewing badges on to local Girl Scout uniforms. I advertised through family friends and my service unit. The money I earned helped me get enough fabric to make 20 bags for foster teens.

Troop 2624 at My Own 2 Hands makerspace

Submitted by Trista Smith

Metro Denver

Littleton

The Girl Scouts of Troop 2624 came to My Own 2 Hands makerspace to earn their “Woodworking” badge! Together, they learned how to use many tools: hammer, screwdriver, drill, impact driver, level, handsaw, miter saw, clamps, and a nail gun! Using these newly learned skills, they were able to make picture frames. They each were able to make their frame unique and custom to their taste by using stain and paint. Each project turned out amazing!

The girls were able to work together as a team to help each other understand the tools. Though some were initially nervous with some of the power tools, others helped to encourage everyone to take a risk and do something they had never done before!

Troop 70720 went for a weekend stay at Meadow Mountain Ranch. We borrowed snowshoes from GSCO, packed our sleds and winter gear, and went away for some fun! For most of the girls, this was their first time snowshoeing. Everyone had a great time!

Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame

I want to share how fun it was to learn about the women in the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame. Knowing of all the accomplishments and contributions women have, is nothing but rewarding. Knowing that I like other girls (Girl Scout or not) have opportunities and potential to be as successful is many women before us.

Pueblo G.I.R.L.s learn about first aid and Girl Scouts

Pueblo Girl Scouts, along with friends, gathered on Friday, January 25, 2019 for a special “Try Girl Scouts” event with a first aid theme. Current Girl Scouts were encouraged to attend to earn their “First Aid” badge AND bring a friend who might also like to become a Girl Scout. There were door prizes for girls who brought friends and for girls who registered to be a Girl Scouts.

At each of the event’s four stations, girls learned how proper first aid can help them become a G.I.R.L.

  • Go-getter- How to use a first aid kit
  • Innovator- Make your own first aid kit
  • Risk-taker- How to build shelters and find water and edible plants in the wild in Colorado
  • Leader- Classes to get certified in first aid and babysitting with ARC through Girl Scouts of Colorado

A special thanks to the seven older Girl Scouts and their leaders who helped run the stations.
