Meet an Expert: National Park Ranger

 

Girl Scouts of all ages are invited to a special, one-hour webinar on Tuesday, December 8, 2020 from 5 – 6 p.m. to meet Park Ranger Laura from Black Canyon of Gunnison National Park.

Black Canyon of Gunnison National Park is just one of many national treasures called “National Parks.” Join Ranger Laura and learn how national parks protect wildlife and nature, how Black Canyon protects the environment, what it’s like to be a park ranger, and how you as a Girl Scout can help park rangers protect the environment.

Please submit your questions in advance through the registration form. Ranger Laura will answer your questions during the program. If time allows, we will also answer questions live during the webinar.

Each panelist introduced herself and spoke to Girl Scouts about her background, education, and path to her current role. After introductions, our panelists answered questions submitted directly by Girl Scouts in advance and live. Some of the questions they answered were:

  • What can girls do now if they want to work in government someday?
  • Did you go to college? If so, what did you study in order to get your job?
  • Did you always know you wanted a career in government?
  • What does it feel like to represent and protect so many people doing your job?
  • What is the best part about being a part of city government?
  • What is it like to be a female in government?
  • What was your biggest challenge to get into the position you’re in now?

Girl Scouts of Colorado thanks Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) State Advocacy Manger, Corinne Pickus, for co-hosting our “Meet an Expert” webinar. More than 15 Girl Scouts from across Colorado participated in this webinar on October 20, 2020. Missed it? Listen to the recording HERE.

Corinne works in the Girl Scout Advocacy Center based in Washington, D.C. The Girl Scout State Advocacy Center provides a tool for you to become a voice for girls and make a difference in your community and across the nation. Together, we can educate policymakers and community leaders on issues that directly affect girls and Girl Scouts. By being an advocate, you will have an impact on girl policy issues moving through Congress and state legislatures.

During the webinar, Corinne spoke with girls about her experience as a student at University of Colorado, Boulder and interning for Governor Polis when he was a state representative. She told girls about how she developed an interest in advocacy and how we can all be advocates every day. She even shared a few of her most memorable experiences as an advocacy manager including organizing a campout for Girl Scouts on the White House lawn in 2015.

Girl Scouts of Colorado thanks former Colorado Lieutenant Governor Donna Lynne, DrPH, for co-hosting our “Meet an Expert” webinar. More than 40 Girl Scouts from across Colorado participated in this webinar on October 8, 2020. Missed it? Listen to the recording here.

Donna Lynne served as the 49th Lieutenant Governor of Colorado from 2016 to 2019. She also served in a dual capacity as the Chief Operating Officer of the State of Colorado. Prior to her appointment, she was an executive with Kaiser Permanente. Today, Donna is the Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Columbia University Irving Medical Center and the CEO of Columbia Doctors in New York, NY. She is recognized as one of the top women business leaders in Denver and one of the top 25 Women in Healthcare in the nation.

Donna spoke to girls about her education, career, and passions. We learned that Donna is an avid skier and hiker, and also has a passion for field hockey. Following the former Lt. Governor’s presentation, Girl Scouts had the opportunity to participate in a live Q&A session. We also learned about the American Mountaineering Center, Expedition Health, Spark the Change Colorado (formerly Metro Volunteers), and Electing Women – all groups and organizations that Donna has worked with throughout her career.

Girl Scouts of Colorado thanks Jill Tietjen for co-hosting our “Meet an Expert – The Energetic Side of Engineering” webinar. More than 20 Girl Scouts from across Colorado participated in this webinar on September 16, 2020. Missed it? Listen to the recording here.

Jill is an engineer, advocate, historian, lifetime Girl Scout, and champion of all women. As a professional engineer, Jill spent more than 40 years in the electric utility industry and was the national president of the Society of Women Engineers and the first woman to serve on the board of directors of the Rocky Mountain Electrical League and its first female president. Jill was on the board of Girl Scouts – Mile Hi Council from 1999 – 2007 and was board chair from 2003 – 2007. She is also an inductee of the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame and the Colorado Author’s Hall of Fame, and a Girl Scouts of Colorado Woman of Distinction. Today, Jill is an advocate for women and girls in STEM fields and the president and CEO of Technically Speaking, Inc.

During this webinar, Jill spoke to girls about her education, career, and what life is like working as a woman in STEM. She also walked girls through a lesson on energy consumption and how the electric utility industry functions. After her presentation, girls had an opportunity to participate in a live Q&A.

Meet an Expert: Business Planning with The North Face Strategy

 

 

 

 

 

Girl Scouts of all ages are invited to a special webinar on Friday, June 19, 2020 at 4 p.m. to learn more about the business side of an outdoors brand with Reese Sun, a North Face Strategist.

Reese will teach girls about the importance of purpose, innovation, and planning to succeed. Girl Scouting at home: “Meet an expert . . .” Webinar Series

Girl Scouts of Colorado is excited to launch our new “Meet an expert. . .” webinar series. Girl Scouts of all ages are invited to different webinars to meet professional women in different career paths. Many webinars will connect directly with an official Girl Scout badge. Each webinar will start with an introduction to our “co-host” followed by a different lesson or activity and a moderated question and answer session.

All webinars will be listed on the GSCO Events Calendar. Advance registration is required. We will use Zoom to host each webinar and capacity is limited to 100 participants.
