In 2012, the Daisies and Brownies of Troop 75 visited the Denver Dumb Friends League for a class and tour. They learned about the incredible work the League does to help 25,000 homeless pets each year, and discovered that the shelter could not operate without its army of 1,200 extraordinary volunteers.

Inspired, the girls voted in January to make the volunteers of the Denver Dumb Friends League their Hometown Heroes for 2013. Throughout the cookie season, the girls asked friends, relatives and each of their cookie customers to buy an extra box to donate. The community response was amazing, and the girls were able to meet their goal of collecting one box of cookies for each of the 1,200 volunteers!

On April 2, Troop 75 delivered 1,200 boxes of cookies (plus a few extra cases for the hardworking staff!) to the Dumb Friends League, where they were gratefully accepted by League staff and Ambassador Dog Jezebel.

About Troop 75: Troop 75 is comprised of 23 Daisies and Brownies from the Ricks Center for Gifted Children. Cafe, Starlight Children’s Foundation, Sunrise Senior Center, Denver Dumb Friends League, and Denver Zoo.

On October 24th, 21 girls from Daisy/Brownie Troop 75 paid a visit to Sunrise Senior Living in Cherry Creek. The girls were hard at work the previous meeting, creating Halloween gifts, treats and decorations for each of the 87 residents. The youngest Daisies arrived first for our visit. They learned about the special needs of seniors, then jumped right in, handing out ghost lollipops to residents. A lively game of Halloween bingo was soon underway, and as the older girls arrived, they joined in the fun. Many of the girls teamed up with residents, while others helped to call out the numbers or hand out their homemade prizes. When bingo came to an end, each girl was individually recognized for her contribution and, of course, her adorable, scary or funny costume. Once the residents were seated for dinner, the girls passed out mummy treat cups, sang songs and paraded through the dining room showing off their costumes. There were smiles all around and it was hard to tell who was having a better time – the Girl Scouts or the residents! Troop 75 is grateful to Sunrise at Cherry Creek for the opportunity and hopes to make a return visit soon!

On April 25th, Rural/Metro-Pridemark Ambulance and Girl Scout Troop 75 teamed up to help each other and help others. The troop of 17 Daises and Brownies used a portion of their cookie sale proceeds to purchase 75 stuffed bears for donation to Rural/Metro-Pridemark Ambulance.

“We give the toys to our youngest patients as a way to help comfort them in a crisis,” says Courtney Morehouse, PIO for Rural/Metro-Pridemark. Many times, children are frightened when they need to be transported by ambulance. The bears help ease their fears and help the EMTs and paramedics provide necessary medical care during an emergency.

As a thank you to the troop, Rural/Metro-Pridemark EMT Kyle Mickelson gave a 30 minute first aid presentation and ambulance tour to the girls. They learned about emergencies, 9-1-1, and first aid safety, which will help the girls earn their First Aid badge.

The stuffed bear donation is part of the troop¹s “caring and sharing” unit, which included collecting 600 boxes of cookies for donation to their Hometown Heroes, the 1,200+ volunteers of the Denver Dumb Friends League; delivering handmade pet beds and toys to the pets at the DDFL; collecting 83 boxes of cookies for donation to Operation Gratitude; and visiting a senior center to visit with the residents, decorate for Valentine’s Day and bring handmade gifts and cards to the residents.
