Girl Scouts announces 2014 Pikes Peak Women of Distinction

Girl Scouts of Colorado is announcing the 2014 inductees into the esteemed Women of Distinction program in the Pikes Peak area at a private reception in June (location TBD). This year’s seven honorees were selected by a committee of their peers led by Selection Chair Amanda Mountain, Vice President and Chief Membership & Branding Officer of Rocky Mountain PBS and Woman to Watch 2012, and chosen based on their contributions to the community, both professionally and personally. The Women of Distinction commit to supporting Girl Scouts of Colorado and serving Girl Scouts today.

The Women of Distinction program began in the area in 2000, though 56 area women were named Women of Distinction in 1994 during Girl Scouts’ 75 Anniversary. Including this year’s honorees, Girl Scouts of Colorado has recognized 113 area women with this honor. The Women of Distinction program brings together a group of women dedicated to raising funds to support Girl Scout leadership programs. More than $325,000 has been raised in 12 years.

Later this year, Girl Scouts of Colorado will publicly honor these inductees at the 2014 Thin Mint Dinner in Colorado Springs at the Antlers Hilton. This event is on Sept. 12 and the program will feature one of Colorado’s up and coming women leaders, Amelia Earhart, who will share her inspirational story behind her summer 2014 around-the-world flight. Lynette Crow-Iverson, President/CEO of Conspire! and Woman of Distinction 2013, is the event chair. Renita Wolf, Senior Strategy Consultant of Wells Fargo Asset Management Group and Girl Scouts of Colorado Board of Directors member, is serving as the event sponsorship chair, and Erica Oakley-Courage, Corporate Market Director of the American Heart Association, is the logistics chair.

Pikes Peak area Girl Scouts help victims of Black Forest Fire

It is very heartwarming seeing the difference Colorado Girl Scouts make in their communities, especially during the holidays.

Right after Thanksgiving, Girl Scouts of Colorado received a very nice note from a recipient of a Thanksgiving food basket. This individual had lost their home during the Black Forest Fire, and was touched to learn through a little note in their basket that the bread had been baked by local Girl Scouts.

After digging a little further on this story, I found out that this is a service project that the Girl Scouts in the Pikes Peak area have done for more than 16 years! This year Girl Scout Ambassador Troop 3740 baked the bread, which was given to Tri-Lake Cares for their holiday food baskets for those in need. Recently on Dec. 8th, the troop of 20 girls, who are from five different high schools in Monument and the Colorado Springs area, baked 60 loaves of homemade yeast bread for the food baskets for Christmas. This troop has  baked bread every Thanksgiving and Christmas for more than six years.

Their troop leader, Cindy Petersen, asked the girls what Girl Scouts meant to them during the baking party on Sunday, here are some of their responses:

  • Girl Scouts is your family away from your biological family that you love to get together with!
  • Girl Scouts is a safe place where you can ask for advice and guidance.
  • Girl Scouts is where we do amazing things within our community to help others.
  • Girls Scouts has given me many life skills which I will take into my adult life, like great leadership skills.
  • Girl Scouts helped me get my first job.
  • Girl Scouts is great to have on your college applications.
  • Girl Scouts has given me more confidence to try new things.
  • Girl Scouts has given me lots of sisters to have fun with!

Nice work to Troop 3740 on carrying on a tradition of meaningful Girl Scout service to the community!

2013 Girl Scouts Women of Distinction honored in Colorado Springs

Last Thursday evening, Sept. 12th, Girl Scouts of Colorado honored the 2013 Pikes Peak Women of Distinction and Women to Watch during the Thin Mint Dinner at the Antlers Hilton in Colorado Springs. A group of 230 gathered at the event, which raised $35,000 for local Girl Scouting programs.

This year’s honorees are a remarkable group. The Women of Distinction include Lindy Conter, Community Volunteer, Women’s Resource Agency, The Women’s Foundation of Colorado and Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame, Lynette Crow-Iverson, President/CEO, Conspire!, Margaret D. Sabin, President of Centura Health South State Operating Group, Penrose-St. Francis Health Services, Barb Winter, Executive Vice President – Organizational Resources, Ent Federal Credit Union, and Dr. Adis Maria Vila, First Chief Diversity Officer, USAFA, Nov. 2010 – June 2013. Women to Watch (an award started in 2012 given to emerging women leaders under 40) honorees, are Ann Cesare, Community Outreach Director, Memorial Hospital, University of Colorado Health, Amber Ptak, Director of Education Programs, Gay & Lesbian Fund for Colorado, a program of the Gill Foundation, and Shannon Rogers, Sales and Relationship Manager, Discover Goodwill of Southern and Western Colorado. Girl Scouts of Colorado honors top women leaders in our community as Girl Scout Women of Distinction or Women to Watch. These women have reached remarkable levels of achievement as business, community and civic leaders. Girl Scouts of Colorado engages Women of Distinction in ongoing Girl Scout activities and programs designed to build the next generation of leaders. Since 1994, 108 women have been named as Pikes Peak Women of Distinction and have raised more than $300,000 for Girl Scouts of Colorado. Including this year’s honorees, a total of five women have been named Women to Watch in the Pikes Peak area.

Mary Kelly, Ph.D., CEO, Productive Leaders, gave the event’s keynote address. The event’s three-course dinner culminated with creative desserts featuring Girl Scout Cookies. Event chair was Claire Garcia, Woman of Distinction 2012, and the 2013 Women of Distinction Selection Chair was Renita Wolf with Girl Scouts of Colorado’s Board of Directors.

Sponsors of this event included BKD CPAs & Advisors, El Pomar Foundation, Ent Federal Credit Union and Gay & Lesbian Fund for Colorado, a program of the Gill Foundation. Special thanks goes to Jym Fair with American Made Film & Media for putting together the event video.

The beautiful grounds of the Penrose House Garden Pavilion are always a treat to visit annually when we hold our Highest Awards Celebration in Colorado Springs. On Tuesday evening, May 28th, we enjoyed a beautiful evening as we honored seven of this year’s Colorado Gold Award recipients as well as dozens of Silver and Bronze Award recipients. It was a great evening to hear how these recipients have gained leadership through earning one of Girl Scouts’ Highest Awards!

This year’s eight honorees were selected by a committee of their peers led by Selection Chair Renita Wolf with Girl Scouts of Colorado’s Board of Directors, and chosen based on their contributions to the community, both professionally and personally. The Women of Distinction and Women to Watch commit to supporting Girl Scouts of Colorado and serving Girl Scouts today.

The Women of Distinction program began in the area in 2000, though 56 area women were named Women of Distinction in 1994 during Girl Scouts’ 75 Anniversary. Including this year’s honorees, Girl Scouts of Colorado has recognized 108 area women with this honor. New to the program last year was the naming of area women under the age of 40 as “Women to Watch.” This year three additional Women to Watch honorees will join the two named in 2012. The Women of Distinction program brings together a group of women dedicated to raising funds to support Girl Scout leadership programs. More than $300,000 has been raised in 12 years.

2012 Girl Scouts Women of Distinction honored in Colorado Springs

Last Thursday evening, Sept. 13th, Girl Scouts of Colorado honored their 2012 Pikes Peak Women of Distinction and Women to Watch at the Thin Mint Dinner at Cheyenne Mountain Resort in Colorado Springs. A group of nearly 225 gathered at the event, which raised money for local Girl Scouting programs as well.

This dinner event spotlighted Girl Scouts’ Live Healthy, Lead Healthy initiative, focusing on self-esteem, good nutrition and exercise that will help prevent health issues and other serious ailments that affect girls and women. Premiering at the event was a video on healthy living created by Colorado Springs Girl Scout Troop 3810. View the video here.

Nancy Saltzman, who recently published Radical Survivor: One Woman’s Path Through Life, Love, and Uncharted Tragedy, was the keynote speaker, and Craig Eliot from KOAA-TV and Katie Carroll from the Better Business Bureau of Southern Colorado were the emcees. U.S. Olympic bobsledding athlete Emily Azevedo, who placed 5th in the 2010 Olympics, signed autographs and posed for photos with guests as well as spoke about healthy living and the impact Girl Scouts had on her life. The event was a three-course dinner featuring the creative use of Girl Scout Cookies. Event chair was Mary Lou Makepeace, the 2002 Girl Scouts of Colorado Mary Jean Larson Community Service Award recipient.

These women have reached remarkable levels of achievement as business, philanthropic, government, education and community leaders. They are committed to making the world a better place for the girls of today and tomorrow. They donate their time, talents and experience to Girl Scouting and also support Girl Scouts financially. Since 2000, 43 women have been named as Pikes Peak Women of Distinction and raised more than $300,000 for Girl Scouts of Colorado.

Girl Scouts announces 2012 Pikes Peak Women of Distinction, Women to Watch

We are excited for Aug. 6th’s rescheduled private reception at The Cliff House at Pikes Peak, where we will announce this year’s class of the esteemed Women of Distinction as well as our Women to Watch, a new honor for emerging leaders under 40. This event is graciously hosted by The Cliff House at Pikes Peak Executive Chef, Scott Savage.

We understand it has been a tough month for the people in the Pikes Peak region due to the Waldo Canyon Fire. Girl Scouts have been offering their support throughout the rebuilding efforts (Blog 1, Blog 2, Blog 3, Blog 4). In fact, Colorado Springs’ Girl Scout Troops 1947 and 863 will be at the event collecting school supplies from event guests for a drive they are doing for students who have lost their homes in the Waldo Canyon Fire.

  • Amanda Mountain – Executive Director of the Tim Gill Center for Public Media and Station Manager for Rocky Mountain PBS/KTSC-TV.  PBS started a program entitled Women and Girls Lead, a multiyear public media initiative amplifying the voices of women and girl leaders, expanding the understanding of gender equity, and engaging a network of citizens and organizations to tune in and get involved. She has been named one of the nation’s top 20 executives under 40 by PRESSTIME, is a graduate of Leadership Pikes Peak class of 2006 and received the Rising Star award by the national board of directors of American Women in Radio and Television.

How to help with the Waldo Canyon Fire relief efforts

We are proud of all the efforts local Girl Scouts have done to help with the relief efforts around the Waldo Canyon Fire.

As a reminder, Girl Scouts CANNOT raise money for fire relief efforts. They can collect ITEM donations, such as food, water, clothing, etc. Or make a monetary donation from a Girl Scout troop treasury or personal funds to a relief agency such as the Red Cross or the Salvation Army. Girl Scouts are also encouraged to volunteer at organizations looking for helping hands.

There are many fire relief activities happening in the Colorado Springs/Pikes Peak area where Girl Scouts can offer their assistance (see list below). These activities change minute by minute, so please check with the organization first to find out the needs. We are also posting relief agency updates on our Pikes Peak Regional Facebook Page.
