Listen now: Meet an Animal Welfare Organization’s Executive Director

Girl Scouts of Colorado thanks Sarah Swanty for co-hosting our “Meet an Animal Welfare Organization’s Executive Director” webinar! More than 25 Girl Scouts from across Colorado participated in this webinar on July 22, 2020. Missed it? Listen to the recording here.

Sarah is the Executive Director for Animal Friends Alliance, a cat and dog shelter and clinic serving Northern Colorado and beyond. Sarah spoke to girls about her journey to leading an animal shelter, current role, and how the shelter works to keep pets in loving homes. She told girls all about the education required to become a veterinarian or vet tech and spoke about the business skills needed to run a successful shelter. After Sarah’s presentation staff at the shelter walked girls through a live intake of three kittens who were getting ready to go to foster homes! We learned about the intake process from beginning to end and how people can sign up to foster animals. Sarah’s favorite Girl Scout cookie is a Tagalong but her husband is a huge Thin Mint fan so she likes those too.

Here are some resources we talked about during the webinar:

We want to hear how your girl is using her Girl Scout skills by taking initiative, caring for the community, and Girl Scouting at home. She can send in her story here.

Longmont Girl Scouts prepare for Holiday Bazaar

Cadette Troop 73392 in Longmont is busy getting ready for The Second Annual Girl Scout Holiday Bazaar! The event on November 21, 2015 features crafts, baked goods, holiday items, and more– all made by Girl Scout troops in Northern Colorado and as far south as Castle Rock.

Troop 73392 has been working for months to make many of the items, which they plan to sell at the Bazaar, including “Gobs,” A.K.A. Whoopie Pies. Pam is writing an article about the troop and the bazaar, which the Longmont Times-Call plans to run the week of Nov. 16, 2015. Please look for it, along with the recipe for “Gobs.”

2015 Founder’s Day Celebration in Northern CO

Submitted by Gayle Worm

Loveland

Northern and Northeastern Colorado

Northern Colorado hosted an extremely successful Founder’s Day on October 24, 2015. It wasn’t only the beautiful weather that contributed to the overall success of the festivities, but the volunteers and staff who contributed to this Girl Scout occasion.

The Girl Scouts and Tag-A-Longs were kept busy with many activities:
• The Recruitment team created a one-of-a-kind scavenger hunt that sent them on a windy path through the nature trails.
• The s’mores station manned by volunteers and the Volunteer Support team filled hungry bellies with a toasty marshmallow, melted chocolate and crisp gram cracker snack.
• The History Committee helped the girls create their own Flat Juliette; learning more about Girl Scout’s founder Juliette Low while fashioning their crafts.
• The People Bingo created by the Northern Colorado Team was also a big hit. The ‘ask around’ questions really got the girls gathering together and sharped their investigative skills. Needless to say, with the large group that attended the event, there were many black out Bingo cards.

Girls received patches, staff made s’more swaps and prizes for completing the day’s activities! Everyone had a fantastic time at this year’s event; the bar has certainly been raised for next year. The Northern Colorado Girl Scouts Office is up to the challenge because isn’t that what Girl Scouts are all about; the knowledge and ability to succeed? Job well done team!

More than a hundred Girl Scout family and friends gathered in Boulder on May 4 to honor Colorado Girl Scouts who earned one of Girl Scouts Highest Awards, the Bronze, Silver or Gold Award.

Six girls were presented with the Gold Award, the highest award a Girl Scout in grades 9-12 can earn. Girls who have earned this award demonstrate extraordinary leadership through a project that makes a difference in their community. Several Bronze Award honorees (the highest award a girl in grades 4-5 can earn) and Silver Award honorees (the highest award a girl in 6th – 8th grade can earn) also were presented with their awards. during Sunday’s ceremony, emceed by Annie Davis, a 2013 Gold Awardee from Boulder.

Girl Scouts of Colorado President and CEO Stephanie Foote said the girls’ spirit and motivation inspires us all to think of the needs of others and take action to make the world a better place.

“You are strong role models for our community and our world,” she said.

Emily Calzolari, Caitlyn Danielle Fitch, Ailee C. Rowe, Rowan Alaina Seabolt, Alexa Jo Stringer and Monica Teagan Weller spent a few minutes describing their Gold Award projects and how working toward Gold impacted their lives.

Emily, of Longmont, provided helmets for the Longmont Ice Pavilion and educated Learn-to-Skate parents and participants of the dangers of skating.

Caitlyn, from Northglenn, taught self-defense classes for girls and boys between the ages of 6 and 18 to promote the value of confidence in everyday life.

Ailee, of Westminster, designed and instituted a program in the local homeless shelter system to stimulate brain activity when the kids were not at school.

Rowan, from Westminster, created a summer horse camp program for children in the community who might not have the resources to have such an experience to explore the world around them and develop their passions.

Alexa, of Lafayette, wrote a curriculum and ran a counseling group for middle-school aged girls to raise self-esteem.

Monica, from Westminster, planned and participated in monthly events alongside Rotary Youth International Exchange students to help them make friends and experience all of the fun and culture of Colorado.

In addition at the ceremony, Curtis Stringer (Gold Awardee Alexa’s father) was presented with one of GSUSA’s top volunteer awards, The Honor Pin, for his outstanding work as a cookie volunteer. The award recognizes an individual’s exemplary service in support of delivering the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) which has had measurable impact on two or more geographic areas of service, allowing the council to reach and surpass its mission-delivery goals.

The ceremony culminated with a bridging ceremony for all of the Girl Scouts present who were “bridging” or progressing to the next level of Girl Scouting.

We are immensely proud of these inspiring young leaders in our community.

Girl Scouts’ memory honored with special high adventure gift for Meadow Mountain Ranch

Since the fall of 2012,  39 Girl Scout teenagers of GECCCO (Girls Enjoying Camping, Canoeing and Cycling Outdoors) Troop 71106 from Northern Colorado (Fort Collins, Loveland, Windsor and Greeley) have been working on a special fundraising effort for their beloved Meadow Mountain Ranch (MMR) Girl Scout camp near Allenspark.

In 2011 this troop lost a cherished member of their group, Taite Pugh of Loveland. Taite had special needs and epilepsy and died unexpectedly. While in Girl Scouts, one of Taite’s favorite activities was zip lining, which she did on an international trip to Costa Rica. She also loved camping with her troop at MMR. And after learning MMR’s future plans of being a high adventure camp for girls, with a zip line being one of the wish list camp features, the girls knew they needed to help with the fundraising efforts and name the zip line to honor the memory of Taite.

On Thursday, March 28th, the troop made their first fundraising milestone, presenting a check to Girl Scouts of Colorado’s CEO, Stephanie Foote, for $10,000 at a Fort Collins Service Center ceremony.

“We are really touched that the GECCCOs decided to keep her memory going through this project,” said Taite’s mother, Cheryl, who shed tears of pride along with her husband and Taite’s father, Mark, at the March 28th ceremony. “Taite left an impression on these girls. They always were good about including her. Girl Scouts opened many new doors. And the trip to Costa Rica was a trip of a lifetime.”

Troop 71106 needs to raise $70,000 for the project, so fundraising efforts are still ongoing. They have held fundraisers for this project, such as a pancake breakfast in the fall and selling bracelets. A part of all their fundraising efforts, including 2013 Cookie Program proceeds, also are dedicated to the zip line project. (The troop sold nearly 10,000 packages of Girl Scout Cookies and is fundraising for travel adventures they are planning to Peru and Alaska, to name a few.) Additionally, the troop is in the process of researching and applying for community grants.

“We hope this project inspires other troops to do community service,” said one of the troop members, Krista Beucler, who also commented that the troop is learning a lot through this project.

Once Taite fell in love with zip lining in Costa Rica she was always the first in line pointing and saying “up, up.” The troop hopes to help more children like Taite with special needs and disabilities find a love for zip lining by starting an annual day for them on this new zip line.

“We really can’t wait to complete the project. The project will make a difference for thousands and thousands of Girl Scouts,” said Sarah Bales, another member of the troop.

For more information on the MMR zip line project and how you can make a contribution, contact Elizabeth Winn at 970-319-3037 or elizabeth.winn@gscolorado.org.

Fox 31 Denver covered this event and aired a story on their morning show on Friday, March 29th. The Fort Collins Coloradoan newspaper also ran a short article and photo in their April 4th edition.
