Girl Scouts of the USA’s CEO conference is coming to Denver in November 2018 and Girl Scouts of Colorado needs a troop to perform a flag ceremony! At least four Girl Scouts are needed, and we can easily accommodate a larger group. The troop should be experienced in performing a flag ceremony and comfortable leading the Girl Scout Promise and Law and Pledge of Allegiance in front of a large audience. The flag ceremony will be on Thursday, November 15 between 8 and 8:30 a.m. We understand this is a school day and that may be a problem for some girls and their families. However, this is a wonderful opportunity for girls to strut their stuff in front of every Girl Scout council CEO and board president from across the country.
In just a few months, Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) will team up with the DC Super Hero Girls to inspire more girls to participate in the Girl Scout Cookie Program®, the largest girl-led entrepreneurship program in the world. The program gives girls real-world experiences managing money, setting goals, meeting deadlines, learning the basics of marketing to customers, and having fun as they learn and earn. This year, Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment will collaborate with GSUSA to foster the female leaders of tomorrow through the 2019 Cookie Pro contest. Using the power of the DC Super Hero Girls, the contest will inspire Girl Scouts to be smart and courageous as everyday Super Heroes. It will also highlight and reward exceptional cookie bosses who take the lead, set high goals for themselves, bring positive change to their communities, and learn valuable entrepreneurial skills.
To enter, Girl Scouts must use a GSUSA-provided template to create their own mini graphic novel that illustrates a true story about their cookie-selling experience. Girls are also required to answer a set of questions to showcase how they used the skills they learned through Girl Scouts to manage their cookie program. In 2018, close to 25,000 Girl Scouts in all grade levels and from all backgrounds participated in the Cookie Pro contest, and in 2019, that number is expected to double.
24 cookie pros will move on to win the Cookie Entrepreneur Experience of a lifetime. These go-getters—four per Girl Scout grade level—will travel to California for the Cookie Entrepreneur Experience, featuring fun activities; meet-and greet-opportunities with prominent business leaders, a special recognition event, and a VIP tour of Warner Bros. Studios with a behind-the-scenes look at DC Super Hero Girls.

Our troop is planning a trip to Florida in October of 2020 to include the Girl Scouts of the USA’s National Convention, along with other fun stuff, such as a visit with Mickey and Harry Potter! You must have completed fifth grade to attend.
A Panama trip is also being planned for those who will be in sixth – twelfth grade. As soon as I have a new date in 2020, I will let you know ASAP!This will include Panama City and learning about the locks and channel as well as working with the Floating Doctors!
At this time, these are Girl Scout trips and I will only be taking names for adults on a first come, first travel basis based on the need for ratios. They are not family trips.

Effective October 1, 2018, Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) has decided girls may do Silver and Gold Award projects for the benefit of the Girl Scout community.
In order to make sure that this change doesn’t dilute the prestige, leadership efforts, or impact of each girl’s project, Silver and Gold Awards must still meet the requirements that are key to taking sustainable action, the project must:
Make a lasting difference in the local community, region, or beyond
Put the Girl Scout Promise and Law into action
Include provisions to ensure sustainability
Identify national and/global links to the selected issue
For Girl Scouts of Colorado, our focus will continue to be on the interests of girls when choosing a highest awards project. This means if a girl identifies a need within the GSCO community and feels passionately about it, she will be allowed to pursue that project by working directly with GSCO’s highest awards manger.
In addition to this policy, the GSCO Outdoor Program team will still not allow projects to be done on camp properties.

These activities are from the Daisy, Brownie, and Junior cybersecurity badges. If you choose to swap out another activity, we highly recommend that you use one from Badge 1: Cybersecurity Basics, since that badge teaches foundational concepts that are built on in badges 2 and 3.

Once your story and photos have been received, public relations director AnneMarie Harper will contact you regarding the number of patches you need and where they should be mailed. Patches will be distributed on a first come, first-serve basis.
Starting a Girl Scout troop is a big deal! Some people jump in with both feet, and others might be a little nervous, perhaps not sure where to start or who to turn to for help.
If you fall into the second group, no worries! We jumped on Facebook, where we turned to the experts—bona fide troop leaders—for insight only they can provide. Specifically, we asked them for the single best piece of advice they have for new troop leaders. The response was overwhelming! There were so many great comments, it was hard to narrow them down. But here are some of our favorites, many of them reflecting clear themes among comments received, and all serving as valuable guidance for new troop leaders (and even those who’ve been at it a while) on starting and running a Girl Scout troop.

As the CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA, I have the best job in the world because I get to travel across the country, talk about Girl Scouts all day, and tell everyone about all the awesome things girls are doing.
I also get to meet some incredible Girl Scouts—true go-getters, innovators, risk takers, and leaders—and see firsthand their G.I.R.L. spirit and ingenuity in action.
I recently met Ellie, an amazing Girl Scout from our California’s Central Coast council, when she came to visit GSUSA in New York, and wow did she impress me. A freshman in high school who has earned her Silver Award and is currently working on her Gold Award. Ellie told me about how she was trying to get a job, but she didn’t have any work experience yet and the job she was trying to get required a resume. So she decided to build her resume around all the skills she’d cultivated over the course of her ten years as a Girl Scout. That’s right—Girl Scouts enabled this G.I.R.L. to have a readymade resume. Talk about go-getting and innovating!

In her resume, Ellie talked about how at Girl Scouts she learned effective leadership and communication skills, and that through the cookie program she built entrepreneurial and business skills while selling up to 500 boxes of cookies a year. She also listed her work as a Program Aide at a Girl Scout summer camp for three years, leading groups of kindergarten, first-, second-, and third-grade girls. And she detailed her Silver Award Take Action project, for which she organized and created “Barton Boxes” of art supplies that she donated to the Red Cross for children affected by the 2017 hurricane.
She got the job and has already been promoted!
I was so inspired by Ellie’s story, and it really drove home for me what Girl Scouts does for today’s girls—just as it did for me when I was a young Girl Scout.
Girl Scouts builds the complete girl, offering her activities and experiences that will ensure she can thrive in whatever path she chooses to pursue. Girl Scouts learn how to solve problems, they learn teamwork, they learn the power of collaboration. They learn how to identify and seize opportunities. How to be prepared so they can create their own luck. And how to persevere—to create a plan, to regroup when things go off-course, to learn from failure and try again.
It’s enterprising and ambitious Girl Scouts like Ellie who make me so excited and hopeful about the next generation of girls who will lead us into the future. We are in great hands.

STEM is a subject area that not every leader, or girl, is completely comfortable with. Terms like programmer, robotics, or even scientist can make people nervous and prevent exploring what these badges or Journeys require. Let’s break down some of those nerves by showing everyone how easy it can be. Selected individuals or troops will record a five to ten-minute video that walks a viewer through a how-to on completing an activity that is part of one of our national leadership Journeys or badges.
• Excitement for STEM and experience leading/participating in the new Girl Scout STEM content
• Willingness to be filmed and have your video published by GSCO
• Able to clearly explain activity and follow a lesson plan
• Work with GSCO to have staff film the how-to video

Since 1912, Girl Scouts across the nation have accepted the charge to get outdoors, respect wildlife, and take care of our environment. And our commitment’s only growing. Yep, we’ve got the passion, the projects, and the new badges to prove it.
We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve teamed up with the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics to expand our environmental conservation and stewardship offerings with five new badges! These badges are the first to specifically prepare girls to be environmental advocates who address problems, find solutions, and protect the natural world (our Junior Outdoor Eco Camper badge completes the lineup for all grade levels).

Daisy Eco Learner Earning this badge is as fun as it is informative! Daisies will learn how to keep plants and animals safe through games, prepare to go on an outdoor adventure of their choice, and remove trash that pollutes the environment.
Brownie Eco Friend As Girl Scouts, Brownies already take care of the environment whenever they spend time outdoors, but with this badge, they’ll learn more ways to treat outdoor spaces and wildlife with kindness and teach others how they can too.
Cadette Eco Trekker
After earning this badge, Cadettes will understand the important role they play in nature and be able to plan an eco trek. The experience will show the girls how to minimize their impact on the environment and teach them ways to conserve, preserve, and protect it.
Senior Eco Explorer With this badge, Seniors will examine different environmental issues—from plastic pollution to wildlife preservation to shoreline erosion—and plan a trip to explore a specific issue. They’ll also learn to work in a team to research and create solutions.
Ambassador Eco Advocate Ambassadors have already learned about the importance of the environment, but by experiencing firsthand how to advocate for nature, they’ll take their skills a step further and have a greater impact. As they earn this badge, girls will hear from environmentalists about issues such as endangered species and the destruction of rain forests and work to explore challenges, create solutions, and advocate for their cause.
By earning these badges, Girl Scouts are taking action in big and small ways to make the world a cleaner, healthier place for all.
