What is the Explore More Club? The Explore More Club is a virtual program for our adult volunteers to have a hands-on badge earning experience, as if they are earning the badges themselves. It is implemented through gsLearn, a private Facebook group, and Zoom.

Explore More Club is not is a training. The Explore More Club does not explicitly set out to teach you how to teach the badge earning curriculum. However, there are times for discussion where we can talk about what that would look like. There is no training curriculum in the Explore More Club.

Are past topics available to new volunteers who sign up for the club? Currently, no. However, we are looking in making this happen very soon.

Can my girl register for this program? This program is for adult volunteers only. However, your girl can participate in a similar program for girls, our monthly Badge Series! If this is something your girl is interested in, check out the informational blog post here!

If I’m not a troop leader but still a volunteer, can I still do this? Absolutely! This program is for all Girl Scouts of Colorado volunteers who want to learn Girl Scout badge curriculum in a hands-on way and have fun while doing it!

STEM Club Activity: Miniature Greenhouses

Today, we’re going to make our own miniature greenhouses! If you would like more activities like this one, join us every other week on Thursdays after school for one of GSCO’s STEM Clubs. Click here for Daisy STEM Club. Click here for Brownie and Junior STEM Club.

You will need:

  • One Paper plate
  • Markers
  • Soil
  • Seeds of any kind
  • Two Clear plastic cups
  • Tape

What is the greenhouse effect? From Britannica Kids: “The greenhouse effect is a warming of Earth’s surface and the air above it. It is caused by gases in the air that trap heat from the Sun. These heat-trapping gases are called greenhouse gases, a common greenhouse gas actually comes from our bodies! Carbon Dioxide! Without the greenhouse effect, Earth would be too cold for life to exist.”

What is a greenhouse? A greenhouse is a building where plants such as flowers and vegetables are grown. Greenhouses warm up during the day by capturing the heat from the sunlight and keep in the heat overnight. The warmth and humidity that a greenhouse provides helps the plants grow faster than they would without a greenhouse. A gardener without a greenhouse is like a cook without a stove!

Let’s make our greenhouse!

Step One: Decorate your plate and cup. You can decorate it with drawings of the plants that will grow in your greenhouse or however you choose. Get creative!

Step Two: Fill one of your clear plastic cups halfway with soil.

Step Three: Take your pinky finger and put four or five little holes in the soil.  Put your seeds in the holes you made in the soil. Then, put a little scoop of soil on top of the seeds!

Step Four: Add some water on top of the soil and place the other plastic cup on top of the other.

Step Five: Tape only one side of the two cups together so the cups can still open on a side and you can water it.  Set your greenhouse somewhere in your house that has sunshine and watch your plants grow!

  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • White paper or colored construction paper
  • Markers

If the construction paper is not available, shapes can be drawn on white paper and colored.

You Will Need:

  • Five – Six Crayon shapes (about 5” long)- Pick your favorite colors and cut out crayon shape for each one.

Once the crayons are cut out, draw eyes, mouth, and paper wrapper. Don’t forget to write the crayon’s name!

On the background sheet, draw and color blue clouds, red hearts, etc. What is your favorite thing to draw? How about a beautiful butterfly? A scary monster?

Last step, glue on your crayons! What is your favorite color?

Oh no! Black crayon lost his paper wrapper! Guess he has to stay in the box!

“Arnie the Doughnut”: Book Craft

This easy craft is perfect for younger Girl Scouts (or younger siblings) and is a great follow-up to “Arnie the Doughnut” by Laurie Keller.

Materials Needed:

  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • White paper or colored construction paper
  • Markers

If the construction paper is not available, shapes can be drawn on white paper and colored.

Cut two doughnut shapes (the second shape is for the icing- edges will be scalloped), mouth, and small white circles for eyes.

Cut, color, and embellish parts. Cut the edges of one doughnut shape to be the icing. Glue on donut sprinkles.

Now, it’s time to assemble your doughnut. Glue icing on the doughnut, then glue on eyes and mouth! Almost done.

Give Arnie some arms and legs. Do you have a favorite kind of doughnut? Éclair? Apple Fritter? Glazed? Or, doughnut holes? Yummy!

STREAM Girls gives Girl Scout Juniors and Cadettes the opportunity to earn a special patch as they serve as citizen scientists, anglers, and artists, to build an appreciation for watershed conservation and the environment. This outdoor watershed experience employs STEM-education (science, technology, engineering, math) plus recreation and arts to explore a local stream.

Every person is a citizen of her watershed, and Colorado Trout Unlimited (TU) has partnered with Girl Scouts of Colorado so that girls will get the complete picture of what their stream could mean to them.

In this hybrid take home/virtual program, TU will provide Girl Scouts with the necessary gear, a STREAM Girls Field Notebook, and a resource list with videos guiding Girl Scouts through six activities that they will complete over ten days. Additionally, girls are expected to join a virtual program kick-off on Thursday and a reflection meeting the next Sunday to discuss what they have learned.

Activities include:

  • Stream Walk – Observing and documenting the stream/river and surrounding area
  • Go with the Flow – Calculating river flow rates using everyday tools and simple math
  • Macroinvertebrate Survey – Investigating the insect life that lives in the stream and support fish
  • Fly-Casting – Developing skills to fly fish and practicing in your own backyard/neighborhood park
  • Fly-Tying – Creating a “fly” to imitate one of the macroinvertebrates commonly found in Colorado
  • Scavenger Hunt/Bracelet Building – Testing your knowledge of healthy streams and creating a unique bracelet to represent your local watershed

Activities are expected to take approximately six hours, in total, and can be broken up into several days. Colorado Trout Unlimited will provide the necessary gear and supplies associated with each activity. Gear will be picked-up and dropped off at designated locations depending on which program you register for. Colorado Trout Unlimited has enough gear/supplies for 24 participants at each program. Additional participants may be able to register, if using their own gear or sharing with another Girl Scout. Please acknowledge any shared gear in registration.

Adults picking up gear on behalf of Girl Scouts will be required to complete a gear agreement upon pick-up. Certificates of completion and patches will be distributed upon gear drop off. If using your own gear, certificates of completion and patches will be mailed after the program is complete. Please indicate if you are picking up supplies or using your own supplies.

As a self-guided event, Colorado Trout Unlimited and GSCO encourages Girl Scouts to complete this activity with their families. Please be sure to follow all state, county, and local public health guidelines surrounding COVID-19.
