Girl Scout Destinations: Have a life-changing adventure next summer

Girl Scout Cadette, Senior, and Ambassadors:

On November 6, 2019, Girl Scouts of Colorado sent out an email encouraging you to apply for a Girl Scout Destination. Well, we had a little technology issue and the dates were wrong from the application submission deadline. Here is the correct information:

Girl applications are due with completed references for Round 1 by December 1, 2019. We encourage girls to complete their application by November 15 to allow time for their references to complete their reference form.

If you do not get your application completed by December 1, 2019, you can still apply in the Round 2, which applications with completed references are due by February 15, 2020.

Also, Girl Scouts in Colorado traveling on GSUSA Destinations are invited to apply for financial assistance to support trips confirmed or completed by December 31, 2020. Application closes on March 6, 2020 and girls will be notified by March 13, 2020.

Sorry again for any confusion this may have caused. If you have any other questions, please email GirlExperience@gscolorado.org.

Your adventure in Costa Rica and Panama awaits

Submitted by Helen Kidwell, Outward Bound Costa Rica

Each summer, more than 100 Girl Scouts from across the country travel to Costa Rica and Panama to participate in the Girl Scout Destinations program with Outward Bound Costa Rica.

Journey through some of the most spectacular landscapes that Central America has to offer, while building lifelong friendships along the way. From scuba diving along coral reefs in Panama to trekking through the rainforest in Costa Rica, each Girl Scout Destination course is packed with adventure.

These unforgettable trips will introduce you to exciting new challenges that will develop your leadership skills and help you discover hidden inner strengths.

It was a crazy experience to open your eyes to look within yourself and at the world around you. Before I was stuck in my comfort zone, and now I feel stronger and braver.” —Annika, Girl Scout Alum

There are also opportunities to give back by working on impactful volunteer projects. Girl Scouts visit indigenous communities and bring much needed restoration to schools and other important community buildings. Those with a passion for conservation can help protect endangered sea turtle populations and play a key role in rainforest reforestation projects.

These service projects are also the perfect chance to develop your language skills and expand your cultural awareness.

It was a great experience for my daughter to be involved hands-on with helping the endangered turtles to lay their eggs in safety. She also enjoyed trying new fruits and other foods, helping to refurbish the sleeping location for future participants, meeting new friends from all over the country, and becoming more aware of the world we live in and need to protect.” —Valerie, Girl Scout mom

Multiple Girl Scout Destination sessions and dates with Outward Bound Costa Rica are now available for Summer 2020!

Courses are open to current members of Girl Scouts of the USA who are between 13 and 18-years-old at the time of course.

To apply, visit the Girl Scouts Destination application page and get ready to start your once-in-a-lifetime trip to Costa Rica and Panama.

This story was submitted using the Share Your Stories form. You can share your Girl Scout moments, too.

Arvada Girl Scout travels to Costa Rica

Costa Rica

Arvada Girl Scout Charlotte B. traveled to Costa Rica for an unforgettable adventure! She was able to make the trip after receiving the “Look Wider” International Travel Scholarship. After returning home, Charlotte shared her memories with her Girl Scout sisters:

During the trip when we were at the beach, we had the opportunity to help and pick up the trash. When we were picking up the trash on the last day, we were able to see the sick sea turtles come to land to either die or lay their eggs when the other turtles weren’t there, so they wouldn’t make the others sick. That showed me how most of us didn’t really think about the sick turtles and what would happen to them. Going sure opened my eyes to what happens down there and how that can effect the community.”

The “Look Wider” International Travel Scholarships are made possible by the Rae Ann and Richard Dougherty Look Wider International Travel Fund Endowment at Rose Community Foundation. Thanks to this generous commitment, Girl Scouts of Colorado will award scholarships to girls every year.

Here are three reasons why you should you apply for Girl Scout Destinations:

  1. DO SOMETHING YOU NEVER THOUGHT YOU WOULD DO. On Destinations trips, you get to try things you’ve always wanted to do—and do things you never imagined you would! There are so many different Destinations to explore that will offer the challenge you’ve been waiting for!                  GSports14_UT_-4157-Edit
  2. EXPERIENCE A NEW CULTURE.                                                                 Girl Scouts really ARE global. We love to get out there and connect with new people; try new food; and take in new sights, sounds, and stories.  Destinations trips also offer you a chance to use what you’ve been learning in school, too! You can immerse yourself in a new culture—and learn about yourself and your own culture in the process. camel
  3. MAKE NEW FRIENDS FROM NEAR AND FAR!                           You’ll arrive at the airport as girls from different states and countries, but you’ll end your trip as lifelong members of the Destinations Crew. Destinations trips are unique Girl Scout experiences because you travel with Girl Scouts from all over the country, and even with Girl Scouts from overseas. In short, the Destinations program is an awesome way to connect with your national and international Girl Scout sisters!            se;foe                                                                                                                                                                                           Once again, the deadline for the first round of applications is Nov. 1, 2015!

You don’t have to currently be a Girl Scout to take part in Destinations—you can become one when you apply! And if you have a friend who is interested in Destinations, tell her she, too, can register for Girl Scouts and apply for a trip!
