Get out and CAMP for summer 2019: Registration for Girl Scout Camp begins Jan. 17

Girl Scout Camp is a place for every girl to answer the call to adventure, grow in confidence, and discover the power she has to change the world! For summer 2019, your girl can hike to the top of a mountain, star in an all-camp skit, or steer a canoe. She’ll try new things, push herself, and embrace challenges.

Girl Scouts of Colorado has sessions designed for girls entering first grade through seniors in high school at both Sky High Ranch near Colorado Springs and Tomahawk Ranch southwest of Denver. Overnight camp sessions are 3 days, 6 days, or 2 weeks. Registration begins at 9 a.m. Jan. 17 on the Girl Scouts of Colorado website at girlscoutsofcolorado.org. Dozens of sessions and camps are available for summer 2019, including:

  • “Lone Rangers” at Tomahawk Ranch- Girls will learn about the barnyard and have a chance to feed, groom, and love our four-legged friends. They’ll also make crafts, master a line dance or two, roast s’mores around a campfire, learn to rope, and more!
  • “Oopy Goopy Science” at Sky High Ranch – Girls will learn how to launch pop and tea bag rockets, explode watermelons, and make fizzy lemonade to drink.
  • “Pioneers” at Tomahawk Ranch- Older girls will take a trip back to the 1800’s! They’ll cook over a fire and make jams and pies with fresh fruit. They’ll also learn to cure their own jerky, dehydrate fruits and vegetables, make cheese, bread, and butter.
  • “Camp Wondering Water” at Sky High Ranch – Older girls will learn how to survive at a primitive campsite and hone survival skills, such as water purification, orienteering, shelter building, and fire safety.

The entire summer camp schedule is posted on the Girl Scouts of Colorado website (http://www.camp.girlscoutsofcolorado.org/). Register early. Some sessions fill in just a few hours!

Girl Scouts of Colorado also offers day camp, family camp, and troop camp adventures throughout the state.

Girl Scout Camp – An essential part of the Girl Scout Experience!

Our goal at summer camp and with outdoor programs, is to provide a safe environment where your daughter can gain essential skills and friendships while having fun and creating lasting memories. We look forward to helping your daughter discover the charm and magic of Summer Resident Camp.

When your daughter unpacks her belongings and settles into her unit, she will be heading for the time of her life. Memories are sure to be made roasting marshmallows around a campfire, singing songs, enjoying meals in the dining hall with her new friends, hiking trails, building shelters, or getting creative with crafts. An extraordinary experience awaits her.

CAMP IS ESSENTIAL TO OUR GIRL SCOUT MISSION

Courage: Camp is a community unlike any other. In an unfamiliar setting, your daughter will find the courage within herself to meet new people and make friends.  As she makes choices and directs projects, she will learn to work within a team, become self- reliant, and develop her leadership skills.

Confidence: For many girls, camp is their first experience away from parents, away from home, and away from familiarity. Camp has unlimited potential to boost your daughter’s confidence or help her find her way out of her shell.

Character: Camp is the ultimate character-building experience. It is a safe place for girls to learn individual responsibility, as they are empowered to take care of themselves.  Though camp counselors provide structure, guidance, and supervision, your daughter is responsible for waking herself and readying herself for the day, making her  bed, being on time to activities, and assuming responsibility for her personal belongings, all often for the very first time.

With all this in mind, send your daughter to camp!  She will gain the courage to tackle everyday obstacles faced with, the confidence to know she will get through, and most importantly gain positive character traits which will make her a successful and joyful individual.

With love from your favorite ingredient within a S’more,

Girl Scouts of Colorado offers many Troop Camp, Day Camp, Family Camp and Resident/Overnight Camp sessions at Sky High and Tomahawk Ranch this summer to help build girls of Courage, Confidence and Character in the outdoors! Because of Girl Scout Camp…part 4

Our photo images from staff below are just a hint of the Top 10 Things You Never Knew About Camp, (a great article from on the American Camp Association’s parent page) which include:

“10. Camp is older than dirt, almost literally. Started in 1861, the camp experience turned an impressive 150 years young in 2011. The secret behind the longevity? “Camps are constantly adapting to meet the changing needs of today’s families,” said Peg Smith, chief executive officer for the American Camp Association® (ACA).

9. Camp is worth its weight in gold, and then some! The camp experience is life-changing – developing friendships and memories that last well beyond the final campfire. And, there is a camp for literally every budget. Often camps offer special pricing or financial assistance, and some camp experiences qualify for tax credits or for payment with pre-tax dollars. Visit www.CampParents.org/affording-camp for more information.

8. Green is “zen.” Research shows that first-hand experience with nature, like those at camp, reduce stress in children and help them better handle stress in the future. In addition to teaching children how to be good stewards of the environment, camps are teaching children how to enjoy the world around them and take a minute to breathe deep and feel the nature, which ultimately teaches them how to de-stress the natural way.

7. Mommies and Daddies do it too. Camp is not just for children and youth. There are family camp experiences, and camps for single adults, senior adults, and any adult that wants to relax and enjoy all camp has to offer. Adults benefit from the same sense of community, authentic relationships, and self-discovery that children do. Camp is an excellent vacation option, allowing adults to try a variety of new activities in a safe and fun environment.

6. Try this on for size! Camp is a great place to try new activities and hobbies. Afraid of rock walls? According to ACA research, 74 percent of campers reported that they tried new activities at camp that they were afraid to do at first. And, those activities often leave lasting impressions. In the same survey, 63 percent of parents reported that their child continued new activities from camp after returning home.

5. Manners matter, and often linger. The camp experience teaches more than just archery or lanyard making. The entire experience is made of teachable moments, perhaps one of the biggest is how to live with a group of people. Campers learn to pick up after themselves, respect each other’s property, and to say “Please” and “Thank You.”

4. Veggies taste better with friends. Hollywood and fictional novels may have given camp food a bad reputation, but in truth, camps are constantly exploring healthy food options, and often are at the forefront of things like allergy specific diets, healthy snack options, and vegetarian meals. According to ACA’s 2011 Emerging Issues survey, 90.7 percent of responding camps indicated that healthy eating and physical activity was an important or very important issue.

3. If everyone else went to camp, maybe there’s something to it! Camp has played an important role in the lives of some of the most talented people in history. ACA’s family resource site offers a list of notable campers – including business professionals, celebrities, artists, and great thinkers.

2. Camp gets those neurons pumping! Education reform debate and concern over summer learning loss have pushed academic achievement into the spotlight. Research shows that participation in intentional programs, like camp, during summer months helps stem summer learning loss. In addition, camp provides ample opportunity for developmental growth, which is a precursor to academic achievement. And, because of the “hands-on” nature of camp, often children who struggle in traditional education settings do well at camp.

1. Camp builds leaders for the 21st century and beyond! Independence, resiliency, teamwork, problem-solving skills, and the ability to relate to other people — these are the skills that tomorrow’s leaders will need, and the skills camp has been adept at building for 150 years. “Tomorrow’s leaders will not be those who can type or text with lightning speed, they will be those who can have a face-to-face conversation and articulate their thoughts, ideas, and values,” said Smith. “Tomorrow’s leaders will be able to relate globally and find common ground with people who are vastly different from themselves — people from different backgrounds and cultures. Tomorrow’s leaders will be made and educated by experiences like camp.”

What’s new with Girl Scouts of Colorado Summer Camp in 2013?

MMR2012_016

Girl Scouts of Colorado (GSCO) is getting excited for the 2013 summer camp season!

Over the last few years, Girl Scout troop camping with staff-led programming has been one of our fastest growing camping segments, yet most opportunities have been outside of the summer camp season. For the summer of 2013 we are offering new summer camp programs to give our troops what they crave – a full group overnight summer camp experience with everything taken care of. You just bring your troop and have fun with them!

Girl Scouts of Colorado has nine camp properties across the state. While all these properties run camping programs year-round, here is a run down of what each property will offer for the summer of 2013:

Hamp Hut, Kiwa Korral, Lazy Acres, Pawnee Lodge and Twisted Pine

Offer a combination of troop camp, day camp and other group use.

Magic Sky Ranch

Magic Sky Ranch will focus on staff-led overnight camp for individual girls with a limited off-property horse program. Archery, high and low ropes, challenge and team building activities and activity center fun continues as just some of the available programs.

Meadow Mountain Ranch

Meadow Mountain Ranch will focus on staff-led high adventure overnight camp for individual older girls as well as “choose your own adventure” troop programming throughout the summer with a strengthened intensive horse program.

Sky High Ranch

Sky High Ranch will focus on staff-led overnight Girl Scout troop and group camp (a new offering for Girl Scouts of Colorado!) with horses, zipline, low ropes, archery, petting zoo, digglers swimming and canoeing.

Tomahawk Ranch

Tomahawk will focus on staff-led overnight camp for individual girls with horses, farm animals and archery.

Other summer camp and property news

  • Girl Scouts of Colorado will also offer more troop camp, family camp and day use opportunities throughout the summer, much of which will be at Sky High Ranch. Participation in these programs is on the rise, and we want to offer more of the experiences that our members crave.
  • All GSCO properties are now open for use by our members and families as well as other groups and organizations. If there is not an existing Girl Scout camp in session or reservation, properties will be available for other rental use. Our properties can accommodate family reunions, trainings, outdoor education, retreats, weddings and more. We hope that our members will take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy our wonderful properties. For more information, visit our website.
  • Watch for more details about all of GSCO’s summer camp opportunities in the Summer Program Guide, coming out in February 2013. Send additional questions to inquiry@gscolorado.org, or read our frequently asked questions on our website.

We look forward to having you camp with us in the summer of 2013!

Girl Scouts of Colorado’s property challenges and creative solutions

Girl Scouts of Colorado (GSCO) has nine camps/rental properties that are amazing assets but that also cost the council money every single day. Our fixed overhead costs include utilities, care and maintenance, water, insurance staff and other expenses.

  • Currently GSCO property occupancy and revenues are low, not coming anywhere near covering our costs.
  • GSCO is facing a $650,000 revenue shortfall due to closing Magic Sky Ranch and Sky High Ranch resident camp sessions this summer in the wake of devastating wildfires.
  • Nationally, both inside and outside of Girl Scouts, participation in resident camp programs is on a declining trend.
  • The popularity of volunteer and staff-led troop camp and family camp is increasing.

So what are we going to do about these challenges? We’re going to offer programs that match what people want to do and get more members and friends to enjoy these beautiful properties! Girl Scouts of Colorado is committed to being careful stewards of our resources on behalf of the girls we serve. We are being responsive to the circumstances we face and the trends in the industry. We’re committed to diversifying and increasing our property revenue streams. We must do this to preserve the quality and service of our leadership programs for girls.

Girl Scout councils around the country are facing similar challenges, and many have had to sell properties to help alleviate financial pressures. That’s not what we want to do. Girl Scouts of Colorado is trying other solutions to more strategically and creatively use our property resources.

Effective October 15, all GSCO properties are open for use by our members and families as well as other groups and organizations. If there is not an existing Girl Scout camp in session or reservation, properties will be available for others to rent and enjoy. Our properties can accommodate family reunions, trainings, outdoor education, retreats, weddings and more. We hope that you will take advantage of the opportunity to spend some time relaxing at our wonderful properties. Visit the property section of our website to learn more.
