Troop 65685 participated in Girl Scouts of Colorado’s Day of Service in January 2021 with a variety of different service projects. Sydney H. hosted a bake sale to benefit St. Jude’s Hospital. She sent out an email to her neighbors explaining her project.

“I think this is super important to the American society because living in a world without cancer is important. Think about it, cancer destroys all different species and it would be nice for this to go away. One of the main reasons is we could lose the amount of deaths each year we have of this disease. In this article it states, ‘Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in American children, resulting in the death of approximately 1,800 kids each year.’ I will be doing a bake sale with two options up for grabs: snickerdoodles and chocolate chip cookies.” – Sydney H.

Sending Love to Our Seniors

For GSCO Day of Service, the Brownies and Juniors of Troop 40132 in Colorado Springs created Valentine’s Day cards for the residents of a local assisted living facility. The girls wrote uplifting messages in their cards and decorated the cards with their drawings and hearts.

Two of our Brownies delivered the cards to the assisted living facility along with some Valentine’s Day decorations for their common area.

Our girls also learned about the message of love, kindness, and equality that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. shared with the world and discussed how we were helping to spread love and kindness to our community.

For Day of Service, I picked up trash. My mom and I went to Roosevelt Park in Longmont and we walked around the whole park and picked up trash with our grabbers. We got more than two pounds of trash! I think it’s important to pick up trash because it helps our community.

Park Clean-Up

For the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, we went to a park to pick up garbage. We were going to go to a local park, but decided to go to Rocky Mountain National Park instead. Unfortunately, there was snow covering the ground, so we didn’t find anything to pick up. We did find some elk though! We made sure to clean up everything except our footprints. We wanted to do our part to leave no trace.

Girl Scouts of Colorado’s Day of Service 2021

Every year on the third Monday in January we celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Many schools and businesses are closed on this day, but it is supposed to be “a day on, not a day off.” It is a day that everyone should spend strengthening their communities, creating solutions to social problems and bridging barriers that will get us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.”

At Girl Scouts of Colorado, we want girls, volunteers, and their families to take this day to connect with their communities and participate in a day of service, as long as they are following current public health guidelines in their community. Girls can even earn our limited GSCO Day of Service patch by participating in a community service project on January 18, 2021! We want everyone to continue to be safe*, so we have compiled a list of community service projects that you can safely do in any part of the state to connect and help your community.

*please wash your hands and wear your masks while preparing and participating in these activities to continue to keep everyone safe.

Community Service Project Ideas:

  • No contact sack meal drop-off: With your family or close social circle, gather some non-perishable items to pack in a brown paper bag. Good items are: water bottles, fruit cups, granola bars, tuna packs, crackers, and snack cakes. (Note: All items must be pre-packaged; no home prepared food.) Pack them up, then connect with a local community center or place of worship to leave them out for those in need.
  • Community clean-up: Get your gloves and trash bags out, wear your mask, and go pick up trash! This could be at your local park, waterways, or playgrounds, really wherever you see litter.
  • Help your neighbors: Get onto your local NextDoor or other social site and ask if there are any projects that people need help with. This could be everything from shoveling a sidewalk to fixing a fence. Best way to know what your community needs is to ask. These helpful activities can and should be done in a contactless way.
  • Spread happiness: Whether this is a sidewalk art project, or writing letters to neighbors all these projects spread happiness to people you don’t even know.
  • National Service Projects: Check out some of the service projects girls are doing across the country. https://www.girlscouts.org/en/girl-scouts-at-home/troop-leaders/national-service-projects.html

Don’t forget to take photos of your community service projects and share your story here on the blog and social media. Tag GSCO on FacebookTwitter, or  Instagram.  Twitter and Instagram users should also use #GSColo and #GirlScoutsGiveBack.

Day of Service: Fireside Productions & GSCO Outreach

Below is a great video from Fireside Productions, who volunteered with one of our Girl Scout Outreach Brownie troops in Jefferson County. Volunteers helped the girls with activities from the Brownie Journey, Wonders of Water.

Thank you to Amelia Jones for working with Fireside Production staff and coordinating the volunteer activity!

Fireside Productions also does video work for our GSCO Women of Distinction events. The company’s culture has a large focus on service and their team does a quarterly service project as a team. We are honored their team choose GSCO’s Outreach Program for this first quarter of 2017!
