Montrose Junior Spreads Joy with Bird Feeders

Submitted by Bonnet Riddles

Montrose

As a troop we had just finished up our Agent of Change Journey and were starting to brainstorm a Take Action project when COVID-19 hit. All of our initial ideas were no longer plausible with the new safety and health guidelines. We were back to the drawing board and this time, that drawing board was a virtual one.

We wanted to help senior citizens in our area. The girls pointed out that our high-risk senior population is extremely isolated and they wanted to do something special to encourage them. The idea of making and donating bird feeders to a local retirement home was born! This project was led and orchestrated by Girl Scout Kendyl L. She bridged to Cadette this year, but with the extension on award projects, she really wanted to earn her Bronze Award before the deadline.

Kendyl and her team started by contacting retirement homes. A hurdle that we did not expect was being able to find a location willing to accept the bird feeders. Most places did not even allow us to finish speaking before giving “no” as an answer. Eventually, we did find a place that loved the idea.

The bird feeders were built and painted at our recent bridging ceremony. Each family, (at their socially distanced tables), worked as a team in assembling and creating a bird feeder for the project, 10 beautifully crafted and painted feeders in total were created.
Kendyl’s team reached out to local businesses and were able to get birdseed donated for the project. The bird feeders were filled and placed along sidewalks and outside of resident windows at Montage Creek Living Facility in Montrose. The completion of this project gives me great joy as a troop leader.

The delight that the elderly residents can enjoy from watching the antics and activities of different birds is priceless. I am so proud of both Kendyl and also of my troop for supporting her in reaching her goal.

Grand Junction Girl Scouts Earn Bronze Award

Submitted by Jenni Grossman

Grand Junction

Congratulations to McKenzie, Lauren, Abbie, Jolie, and Peyton from Troop 13497 in Grand Junction! They earned the Girl Scout Bronze Award for a project to help seniors in nursing homes who may be feeling lonely due to visiting restrictions as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The girls made videos and special crafts, including photos, drawings, and activity sheets, for multiple nursing homes in their area. Two of the nursing homes were chosen because one of the girls has a family member living there.

The Girl Scouts started a different project to earn the Bronze Award in February 2020, but then had to do a 360 in March when COVID-19 hit. They thought the residents of the nursing homes would be so lonely due to visiting restrictions. The girls decided to make videos of their favorite children’s books so the activities directors could play them for the residents. The girls also wanted some activities for the residents. After the girls called multiple places, they learned they had to laminate whatever they picked, so it could be sanitized. They each made five to ten different sheets (drawings, word searches, mazes paintings, colored pictures with uplifting quotes) for the residents. The girls also made copies of their work and laminated each one. Each nursing home received 40 drawing/activity laminated sheets. We also gave the organizations a list of the videos that the girls made so they could access them whenever they wanted.

Bronze Award Project Continues to Make an Impact

Two years after earning the Girl Scout Bronze Award, Troop 6608’s project continues to make an impact on their community. The Girl Scouts from Centennial rebuilt an outdoor classroom for their school, Willow Creek Elementary. It was completely overgrown, so the girls cleaned it up and built six benches, reusing a couple of dead trees. They also painted rocks.

Bronze Award Girl Scouts Deliver Masks, Lanyards, and Sneeze Guards to Teachers and School Staff

As many as ten Girl Scout Juniors from Troop 65430 in Highlands Ranch – Lone Tree delivered 40 plexiglass sneeze guards, more than 65 reusable masks, and 70 mask lanyards, along with “welcome back” cards— all of which they made — to teachers and staff at Wildcat Mountain Elementary School on Friday, August 14, 2020. In the midst of a global pandemic, these Girl Scouts wanted to help teachers, staff, and classmates return to in-person learning as safely as possible. The troop paid for the supplies for this project with funds earned through the Girl Scout Cookie Program. Through this project, the girls also earned the Girl Scout Bronze Award, which is the highest award for Girl Scouts in fourth or fifth grade.

Peetz Girl Scouts establish blessing box

Submitted by Michele Gentry

Northern & Northeastern CO

Peetz

Our multi-level troop did a Take Action project to earn Bronze and Silver Awards. They presented their idea of a “blessing box” to the local Lions Club in order to gain their support and address the sustainability aspect of their project. They also presented to a local church that allowed them to place the box at their entrance. The girls spent several months prepping the box and placing logos of their sponsors and donors on the sides of the box. They were finally ready to put it in place on February 23, 2020.

Troop 66517 Bronze Award project

Submitted by Brittney T.

On December 23, 2019, we completed our Bronze Award project. We wanted to do something that would benefit our community and our peers. We’ve all had hard days at school, so we chose to paint sayings on the bathroom walls to remind our fellow students that everything is going to be ok! Things like, “Throw Kindness like Confetti” and “Believe you can and you will.”

First, we worked together to come up with our sayings, we wanted them to be inspirational, but easy to remember too. Next, we worked together to build our presentation for the principal. Once we were confident we had a good presentation, we made an appointment to present to the principal.

Once we had an agreement with the school, we rounded up our troop leaders and we went to school over Christmas Break! Our leaders stenciled our sayings on the wall for us, then set us loose with the paint! It was a little scary, because we really only had one chance to get it right with the paint. We worked together and cheered each other on and everything turned out great!

We hope our work will help to inspire students for years to come! Thank you, Campbell Elementary, for letting us come paint on your walls! A special thank you to the janitors for staying with us on their day off, as well!
