From a leader’s perspective, one of the great things about the journey program is adapting them for your troop. Our troop of 20 Cadettes loves to participate in STEAM activities so our mission with the “Breathe” journey was not only to learn about air quality but also to learn about air travel and engineering.
We recently had a visit from the Arvada Associated Modelers to learn about remote controlled airplanes. We are the first Girl Scout troop they have visited, so it was exciting for everyone. The girls had many questions for the club President, Ted Hughes and Chief Flight Instructor, Dewey Louderback.
AAM does training at their field in Golden and they reserve Thursday evenings late spring – Fall to train new pilots using the buddy fly system. It costs nothing to learn about flying! Check out http://www.arvadamodelers.com/ for more information. Now that we have had the introduction, our troop is anxious to develop a badge around remote control activities.
Other activities our troop hopes to do as part of this journey are to complete requirements from the old Aviation badge, visit Wings Over the Rockies, build kites to participate in the Arvada Kite Festival in April and go to the Balloon Festival in Erie.
