Awesome Girls: Marketing Me!

You’re great. So, how do you share your accomplishments and talents with others without under selling your skills or seeming too conceited? It can be hard to talk about yourself, so we are here to help! Join us as we hear from three inspiring job recruiters about how to advocate for yourself, build your skills, and tell your story to colleges, employers, and even your cookie customers!

This interactive event will connect you to three experts from RSM who will share their career journey and a little about their past. You’ll learn what it means to think like an entrepreneur and how to market to your customers in the upcoming Girl Scout Cookie season. Then, you’ll have a chance to have your own career exploration questions answered and hear questions from your Girl Scout peers.

RSM is a leading audit, tax and consulting firm , and they can’t wait to share their knowledge and experience with you!

This program is designed for girls in middle and high school. The event will inspire you to get started on a Girl Scout badge, like Business Etiquette or My Portfolio, and prepare you to let your skills shine as you connect with cookie customers.

Please note, this event begins at 6 p.m. Eastern, 5 p.m. Central, 4 p.m. Mountain, and 3 p.m. Pacific. We acknowledge that the timing may not work with your schedule; you can register and view the playback when it is convenient for you!

Girl Scout Gold Award Project: Helping Veterans Experiencing Homelessness

I had always wanted to complete the Gold Award. Not just because it is the highest honor a Girl Scout can receive, but also due to the idea that I could make an impact in my community just by using my ambition and brain. Even though this dream was always present, it was really difficult to find a topic that was important to me and that I could tackle in the year and a half I had left as a Girl Scout Ambassador. Then, one day as I was driving to my job and came face-to-face with someone I wanted to help: a veteran experiencing homelessness. 

We all have a connection to the military, whether it is someone in our immediate family, a friend, or a distant relative. Because of their willingness to give their lives to protect the lives of this country, I have the utmost respect for people in the service. My heart broke when I saw a veteran on the street corner as I drove by. When I arrived home, I went straight on my computer to learn more about veterans experiencing homelessness. What I found was shocking. Colorado has the seventh highest population of veterans experiencing homelessness, and it is continuing to grow every year.

And so my project was born. My original plan involved a lot of face-to-face conversations and volunteering, unfortunately due to COVID my project had to be completely rewritten. Instead, I spent my time doing deep research on: the problems this population faces and the reasons they fall into homelessness. I used this information and created a website where people can learn more about this population and hear from some veterans on their experiences. 

In order to share my learning with others, I am creating a documentary video which will be given as an optional assignment for the juniors and seniors at my high school explaining my project and the issue I tackled. Project Homefront doesn’t just hope to bring awareness, and raise clothing and food donations for a population in need, it hopes to teach how to face an issue and start to solve it through education and action.

Every Gold Award will bring challenges. It forces you to grow and learn more about yourself than you might not have had the opportunity to do without it. The biggest impact working on this project has had on me is teaching me that we have the drive to create the world in our dreams, however we can’t do it just with words we have to do it with work and time. If you dedicate time and open your mind to the possibilities of change, you can build a world we all want to call our own.

September 2020 Tools for Independence Older Girls: Healthy Relationships and Dating Safely

Are you curious about dating?

Do you watch romantic movies and wonder if dating is really that easy and simple?

Are you curious about how to spot red flags and get out safely, if you find yourself in an uncomfortable or unsafe situation?

Are you curious about what love really looks like?

Are you curious about the difference between love and romance?

Are you curious about how to see through some of the more common lies people tell in a relationship?

Are you curious about how to determine where your boundaries are, and how to communicate them to a partner?

Are you curious about healthy relationships?

Are you curious about how to date safely?

These are the topics Seniors and Ambassadors will be discussing in our third installment of Tools for Independence: Older Girl Edition Health and Safety Series on Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at 4 p.m.  Joining us will be Valerie Weaver LCSW, from Girl Scouts of Greater New York. Valerie is a social worker on the Troop 6000 team in New York City, where she helps girls ages five-17 living in homeless shelters. She specializes in working with children, adolescents, and families. Girl Scouts of Colorado is thrilled to have her join us in this discussion.

  • We are keeping the language/conversation as gender neutral as possible. We support ALL girls regardless of orientation, and we want ALL girls to be in safe and healthy relationships.
  • We are coming from a fact/evidence-based perspective.
  • It is not our intent to scare girls into not dating, but to give them tools they can use in high school, and adulthood, to make sure that when they do date, they are in safe, healthy, loving relationships.
  • We will stress that they need to stay within the boundaries that the adults in their household have set, in addition to setting their own boundaries.

Tools for Independence Club for Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors

Calling all Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors!

Do you want to be more independent when it comes to your clothes? Do you want to be able to fix a plumbing emergency on your own? Do you want to help more in the kitchen? Do you want to be able to do basic first-aid? Then, Girl Scouts of Colorado’s Tools for Independence Club is the club for you!

Starting September 21, 2020, GSCO  staff will be teaching girls to be more independent by teaching laundry skills, toilet maintenance, household cleaning skills, and basic first-aid. In this biweekly virtual series, you will get to know yourself and what you are capable of by learning and practicing skills that are important for your independence. You will have fun and try new things in a safe, engaging environment. Each session will focus on a particular skill. Join us online every other Monday at 4 p.m.

  • September 21: Laundry Part One
  • October 5: Laundry Part Two
  • October 19: All About Toilets
  • November 2: Household Cleaning
  • November 16: First-Aid One
  • December 7: First-Aid Two

Participation satisfies some requirements for the Junior Independence and multi-level First-Aid badges.

GSUSA Campfire Chat: The Truly Great Outdoors

In a time that is full of unprecedented stress and anxiety for so many of us, we could all use the healing power of Mother Nature. Join the Girl Scout Network in partnership with The North Face from 1- 2 p.m. EST on Tuesday, September 22, 2020 for an exploration of the mental wellness benefits of getting outside, as well as the importance of creating space for everyone to experience the power of the outdoors. Girl Scout Ambassadors Celebrate Together

Natalie B., Joslyn H., and Lily R. have been members of Girl Scout Troop 11056 since they were in first grade. Together, these Girl Scouts have earned badges, completed community service, sold tons of cookies, developed their leadership skills, and of course, had fun. All three girls earned their Silver Award and Joslyn earned her Gold Award. This week, they celebrated together with a barbecue and mask making party. They decided they would use the remaining troop funds to become Lifetime Girl Scouts.

FBI Tour for Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors

Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors are invited to a special “mini teen academy” program at the Denver FBI office on  Friday, November 15, 2019 from 9 a.m. – noon. The traditional Teen Academy program allows high school students an opportunity to get a comprehensive look into today’s FBI. This program will include a panel discussion with female FBI employees,  SWAT demo, tactical demonstration from the Evidence Response Team (ERT), and presentation on cyber safety.

This is a drop off event. Participants should arrive by 8:45 a.m. to start check-in. Girls will be required to submit a parent permission form, photo release, and indemnity form to participate. Girls ages 18 and older will be required to provide their date of birth, social security number, and full name to comply with FBI policies, and bring a photo ID on the day of the event. Two Girl Scouts of Colorado staff will accompany the group.

Capacity is limited to 40 Girl Scouts. Registration will close on Tuesday, November 5 OR when capacity is met.

Please be aware that the program is subject to change based on the needs of the FBI.

All attendees must have a current Girl Scout membership.

Earn hours toward your Take Action badge by helping GSCO

GSCO’s Denver office is looking for eager troops or girls to help with their outdoor program gear. Volunteering can help you earn hours toward your Take Action Badge!

We need Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors, or Ambassadors to meet us at the Denver office starting as soon as this weekend to help with the following tasks: 

  • Pitch tents and compile all working parts of the tents
  • Open pop-up canopies 
  • Take home cast iron, Dutch ovens, and cook kits to clean – then return to Denver office

Help will be on a first come, first served basis in gaining hours towards the Take Action Bar. 

Please contact Marissa Rooney, outdoor program coordinator, to set-up a time that works with you/your girls to help with these tasks.

Open to Junior, Cadette, Senior, or Ambassadors only.

Four badges Ambassadors can earn during the Girl Scout Cookie Program

As a Girl Scout Ambassador (grades 11–12) taking part in the Girl Scout Cookie Program, you’re helping lead the largest entrepreneurial program for girls in the world. You’re learning essential life skills, setting (and crushing!) impressive goals, and using your cookie earnings to go on epic adventures and make the world a better place!

Many of these incredible skills and accomplishments start with a Girl Scout badge—and we’re about to explore all of the badges Ambassadors can earn during cookie season.

By earning the On My Own badge, you’ll learn how to avoid financial pitfalls while exercising independence as you achieve your dreams. This badge takes budget planning to the next level—from setting yourself up for your future dream home (and learning the importance of location, location, location) to your retirement years (seriously!). You’ll budget for daily needs and fun adventures like traveling or hobbies, and even prepare for unexpected expenses—because you never know when you’ll need to fix something in a flash. And because Girl Scouts know how to give back, you’ll learn about ways to set funds aside for those in need. Earn this badge.

There will be a time, or times, in your life when you’ll have to borrow money, whether through a credit card or a loan. With the Good Credit badge, you’ll learn how to keep good credit (a report card of your financial history), borrow money successfully, and pay back what you owe on time. There are many ways you can borrow money, and this badge will help you tell the difference between each and determine what works best for you! Earn this badge. 

Through the Research & Development badge, you’ll learn how businesses invest in researching and refining new ideas and bringing them to market—then you’ll apply your newfound knowledge to your own cookie business! First, you’ll take a step back to see how well your cookie business is doing and if you notice any sales trends you can tap into. For example, are you getting more sales going door-to-door or through your Digital Cookie platform? If one outweighs the other, you can decide if you want to redirect your time and efforts. You’ll get inspired by companies you like and explore how they change things up for their customers. Earn this badge. 

The P&L badge is all about practicing good business ethics by looking at both the business P&L (profit and loss) and the Girl Scout P&L (Promise and Law). Business ethics are very important for business owners, because they reflect everything your company is about, including how it treats its employees and even the environment. Not to mention good business ethics = the Girl Scout way! With this badge, you’ll create your own Cookie Promise to ensure you provide your customers (and fellow troop members) with high-quality service and products. Then you’ll share your cookie legacy with others, especially younger Girl Scouts. (You are sisters, after all!) You can teach them about being a great cookie boss as you share your skills—and, most importantly, you can help them build the courage, confidence, and character to be just like  you! Earn this badge.
