Zombie Survival Challenge: Be prepared, not scared

More than 350 Girl Scouts participated in Girl Scouts of Colorado’s first-ever Zombie Survival Challenge in events across the state in October 2019. Girls participated in stations that started the conversation of how they would be prepared in a natural disaster. They learned about shelter building, energy food choices, pet preparedness, water purification, and even practiced first aid scenarios… all with a zombie theme of course!

While all the zombie events are over for the year (YES, we will be back next year!), there are still steps you can take as a Girl Scout to be prepared, not scared.

  1. Discuss with your family what your emergency plan is. The American Red Cross has a great Family Disaster Plan (https://www.redcross.org/content/dam/redcross/atg/PDF_s/Preparedness___Disaster_Recovery/General_Preparedness___Recovery/Home/ARC_Family_Disaster_Plan_Template_r083012.pdf) to guide you through questions to think about if there was a natural disaster in your area.
  2. Create an emergency supply kit. This should contain some nonperishable food and water, first aid kit, and other supplies that your family would need if they had to leave the house in a hurry.
  3. Have pets? Don’t forget about them! Just like you would create an emergency supply kit for your people, create one for your pets.
