First-Year Daisies spread the love

As our local food pantry geared up to serve 100+ families this Thanksgiving holiday, our Daisy troop realized a need and put into action “Considerate and Caring” and partnered with families of our local elementary school to conduct a food drive.

Our troop spoke ofJuliette Gordon Low’s birthday and how special a day like that must be. We discussed what it might be like if we didn’t have enough to celebrate. The girls discussed their feelings and we came up with a solution of donating birthday bags to our food bank for families celebrating their special day!

Our Daisy troop has been working on our petal year and to put our lessons into action, we’ve been collecting food donations for our local food pantry, delivering 200+ items to help feed families for Thanksgiving!

To honor our founder Juliette Gordon Low, we donated 12 birthday bags to the food bank for families in need to enjoy their birthday celebration. The girls loved getting to put things together and watch as it carne full circle on delivery day!

Troop 65742 visited the Children’s Museum of Denver earlier this month to work on a variety of badges, patches, Journeys, etc. Girl Scouts were able to do many activities toward their various “Superhero” patches and “Science” Journeys, such as cooking, fire trucks, science (bubbles and balls), break dancing, vet role play, camping/wilderness role play, climbing the tower, etc. We had a blast and everyone learned aspects of teamwork.

Broomfield Girl Scouts work together to support a local charity

Broomfield

In honor of Juliette Gordon Low’s birthday, Daisy and Brownie Troops 66586, 65575, and 67462 combined forces to conduct a Birthday in a Bag Drive. Each participating girl was asked to do their best to collect items such as cake mix, frosting, candles, plates, napkins, and theme decorations. They were encouraged to reach out beyond their families to obtain supplies. Participating Girl Scouts who collected enough supplies to complete two bags were given a “Birthday in a Bag” fun patch.

All donations were given to A Precious Child Family Resource Center in Broomfield. At this facility, referred families are welcome to come in and shop (at no charge) for items they so desperately need. When a supported family has a child’s birthday, they are able to select an assortment of birthday supplies, in addition to shopping for food pantry supplies.

We are very proud to announce that our Girl Scouts collected enough donated supplies to fill a total of 46 complete sets of birthday bags for local children and their families. Plus, there were an additional 18 boxes of cake mix, 18 cans of frosting, and 24 boxes of candles for our charity’s food pantry shelves.

The leaders and participants of these three troops had such a positive experience that they have already begun planning their next community service project.

Best practices for a successful World Thinking Day event

Take the lead on February 22 to celebrate 2019 World Thinking Day with Girl Scouts and Girl Guides from 150 countries! (That’s one big celebration!) Girls also celebrate World Thinking Day throughout the spring.

World Thinking Day originated in 1926. That’s when delegates from around the globe met at Camp Edith Macy—now called Edith Macy Conference Center—in New York state and agreed February 22 would henceforth be known as a special day for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts worldwide.

Every year since, World Thinking Day has called for Girl Scouts and Girl Guides to join and take part in activities that promote changing the world for the better.

The GSCO Global Action Committee also wants to hear from you (VSS, Service Unit Managers, troop leaders, etc.) about the exciting plans you’ve been working on for World Thinking Day. If you are planning a World Thinking Day celebration, please fill out the form linked HERE so the Global Action Committee can compile data and help you make your celebration the best it can be!
